If you seek a serene and scenic desert wilderness experience away from crowds, this trip is ideal. Beginning near Slickrock, Colorado, we traverse the picturesque “Little Glen Canyon” with its sandstone formations reminiscent of Glen Canyon’s beauty. Exiting into the expansive Big Gypsum Valley, we encounter towering salt block formations and dramatic 1000-foot tall rock walls that split the river. As we journey through the 29,000-acre Dolores River Canyon Wilderness Study Area, marvel at the river’s twists amidst soaring sandstone cliffs and explore hidden side canyons with ancient petroglyphs. Wildlife sightings, including deer and bighorn sheep, add to the adventure, culminating in a visit to the historic Bedrock Store, a setting from “Thelma and Louise.”
