Salida’s historic downtown district is one of the most walkable and vibrant small-city downtowns in Colorado. A stretch of well-preserved Victorian-era brick buildings is now filled with local galleries, boutiques, breweries, and restaurants. Salida has more working artists and galleries per capita than nearly any other city in Colorado. Monthly First Friday Art Walks bring the community out in full force, and the Salida Steam Plant Event Center, a beautifully restored 1887 power plant that hosts concerts, film festivals, and events year-round.

3. Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center

One of Salida’s best-kept secrets: the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center is the largest indoor hot springs pool in Colorado. Open year-round, it’s the perfect place to soak tired muscles after a day of rafting, biking, or hiking. The naturally heated mineral water pools range in temperature, and it’s a true local favorite, far less crowded and more affordable than the resort hot springs up the road.

4. Monarch Mountain Skiing & Snowshoeing

Just 23 miles west of Salida, Monarch Mountain is one of Colorado’s most beloved family ski resorts, with none of the crowds or price premiums of the big-name resorts. Sitting atop the Continental Divide, Monarch consistently receives over 350 inches of snowfall per season. In summer, the Monarch Crest is accessible for hiking, and the road over Monarch Pass is a stunning scenic drive.
