Welcome to the Dolores River’s Gateway Canyon, one of the longest rafting trips in America! As the river emerges from Slick Rock Canyon, it enters Paradox Valley, a fascinating geological feature where the river cuts across instead of through the middle of the valley. The area is rich in history, with Pueblo Indian culture and Western tales of rustlers adding to the adventure. In the spring, nesting waterfowl add to the natural beauty of this wild landscape.
Moving forward, the river carves through Paradox and Mesa Canyons, offering stunning views and remnants of a remarkable “hanging flume” to marvel at while rafting. Near Gateway, the journey intensifies as the river plunges into Gateway Canyon, challenging rafters with some of the most difficult rapids along the entire route. Continuing downstream, the Dolores River merges with the Colorado River, culminating in a memorable rafting experience.
By combining Ponderosa Gorge, Slick Rock, and Gateway Canyons, you create one of the longest and most exhilarating rafting trips in the West. Each day on the river brings encounters with wildlife like mergansers and great blue herons, along with opportunities to explore desert landscapes from a unique perspective. This adventure is filled with exciting whitewater, captivating geology, ancient Indian ruins, picturesque side creeks, and breathtaking sunsets.
