Challenge yourself on an unforgettable Royal Gorge rafting journey on the Arkansas River.
Prepare for a day of heart-pounding excitement as you join Wilderness Aware Rafting on our full-day Royal Gorge white water rafting trip. Located in the heart of Colorado’s wilderness, you’ll immerse yourself in the sheer beauty and adrenaline of Arkansas River whitewater rafting. As one of the more advanced sections in the Buena Vista white water rafting experience, Royal Gorge offers an unmatched combination of intensity and scenery.
The Royal Gorge is one of the most exciting sections of the Arkansas River. What makes the experience exceptional isn’t just the rapids — it’s who guides you through them.
Experienced Guides Who Read Both the River and the Group
Our guides train extensively on the Arkansas River and know the Royal Gorge in a wide range of conditions. They combine technical boating skill with calm, proactive communication so guests understand what’s happening and feel confident throughout the day.
Balanced Adventure
The Royal Gorge delivers exciting rapids, but our trips are never about pushing guests beyond their comfort zone. Guides set a clear tone early, explaining what’s coming and helping everyone paddle as a team.
Thoughtful Full-Day Experience
This trip isn’t rushed. The morning starts in Bighorn Sheep Canyon, a perfect warmup for the Gorge. You’ll have time to enjoy the scenery, take in the geology of the canyon, and share a delicious lunch before taking on the Royal Gorge.
Small-Group Attention
Our guides pay close attention to each boat and each group, adjusting the trip as needed so everyone feels included and supported. This approach is why many guests return year after year and recommend Wilderness Aware to friends and family.
Price includes parking. Price listed does not include land and water access fees (9%) or gratuity for your guide.

The Royal Gorge typically runs May through September, depending on river flows.
Snowmelt creates higher water levels and bigger waves. This is when the Royal Gorge feels most powerful and dynamic.
Rapids remain exciting, but the river becomes more friendly and manageable.
Lower flows reveal more of the canyon’s geology and offer a more technical boating experience.
No matter the conditions, our guides adjust each trip to the river level and the comfort of the group.
We get that plans change, so we’ve designed our cancellation policy with our guests’ busy schedules in mind:

Yes. While the Royal Gorge includes bigger rapids, safety is built into every Wilderness Aware trip through experienced guides, thorough safety briefings, and careful group management.
Guests are taught exactly how to paddle and what to expect before entering major rapids.
Experience helps but is not required. Many guests on this trip are adventurous first-timers who feel comfortable following instructions and working as a team with their guide.
Wear quick-dry clothing such as swimwear or athletic wear. Avoid cotton when possible. Secure footwear like river sandals or water shoes is recommended.
We provide helmets, life jackets, and other safety equipment.
Participants should be comfortable paddling and able to swim if necessary. The trip involves physical activity and teamwork.
High water can make the rapids bigger and more powerful. Our guides evaluate river conditions daily and adjust trips accordingly to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Yes. The Royal Gorge Bridge area offers several viewpoints where friends or family may be able to see rafts passing through the canyon. Or they can take a scenic train ride on the Royal Gorge Scenic Railroad.

• An experience that felt well organized from start to finish
Many say the Royal Gorge trip with Wilderness Aware became the highlight of their Colorado adventure.
The Royal Gorge is Wilderness Aware’s most intense single-day rafting experience on the Arkansas River — featuring continuous Class IV and Class V rapids through canyon walls that rise over 1,000 feet above the river. Guests who’ve done both consistently describe the Gorge as noticeably more demanding than the Numbers. That said, more intense doesn’t mean unmanageable. With the right attitude, a willingness to paddle hard, and trust in your guide, the Royal Gorge is an achievable and unforgettable adventure. If you’re comfortable on Browns Canyon or the Numbers, the Royal Gorge is a natural progression.
The Royal Gorge is appropriate for adventurous first-timers who arrive prepared to paddle actively and follow guide instructions immediately. The minimum age is 14. Mixed-experience groups — including some first-timers alongside more experienced rafters — do this trip every season and have an outstanding time. The key is mindset: guests who engage fully, paddle hard, and trust their guide have a phenomenal experience. Guests who are passive or hesitant may find the intensity more challenging. If you’re unsure whether your group is ready, call us at 719-395-2112 and we’ll have an honest conversation.
Only our most senior guides are cleared to lead Royal Gorge trips. The minimum qualification to guide the Gorge is 750 documented river miles — and every guide we assign to this section far exceeds that. Many of our Royal Gorge guides have thousands of river miles and multiple seasons on this specific section of the Arkansas. Their technical skill, calm decision-making, and ability to manage groups in dynamic conditions is what makes this trip both thrilling and safe. When you raft the Royal Gorge with Wilderness Aware, you’re in highly experienced hands.
The Royal Gorge full-day trip runs approximately 6 hours on the water — notably longer than a Browns Canyon full-day. Factor in check-in, gear-up, shuttle to the put-in near Canon City, and the return drive, and you should plan for a full day out. The extra time on the river means experiencing the entire Royal Gorge section and the full grandeur of the canyon — including every major named rapid. It’s one of the most substantial single-day rafting experiences available in Colorado.
The Royal Gorge section sees significantly less commercial traffic than Browns Canyon, and we time our departures strategically to minimize overlap with other groups. Multiple repeat guests — including long-time visitors who’ve rafted with us for 20+ years — have noted that the Gorge felt like a private experience. We can’t guarantee complete solitude, but the combination of limited permit access and thoughtful scheduling means you’ll typically enjoy the canyon with far fewer people around than at more popular Colorado rafting destinations.
Both situations are normal parts of rafting the Royal Gorge, and our guides are specifically prepared for them. One of the Gorge’s distinctive features — a rapid called Corner Pocket — involves a sharp left-hand turn where rafts occasionally brush the canyon wall; this is a known characteristic of the rapid, not an error, and your guide briefs your group in advance. If a guest goes overboard, guides execute swift water rescue immediately. Every guide on this section carries rescue equipment and is certified in swift water rescue techniques. The intensity of the Gorge is real — and so is the quality of our safety preparation.
Everything you need before you hit the river — in one place. Sign your waiver online before you arrive, download packing lists so nothing gets forgotten, check departure directions for your specific trip, and browse river maps to get familiar with the water you’ll be on. The more prepared you are, the more fun you’ll have.
Choose from a variety of Colorado rivers, day trips, and multi-day trips to find just the right option for you and your crew. Better hustle, because they’re booking up quick!
