The Arkansas River through Browns Canyon comes straight from high-elevation snowmelt which means the water can be cold and ranges from 45-65 degrees depending on the season. Proper gear makes all the difference between an amazing day and an uncomfortable one.

What to Bring:

  • Quick-Dry Clothes – Wear under your wetsuit (if wearing one)
  • Avoid cotton—it stays wet and makes you cold
  • Quick-dry athletic wear or board shorts work great
  • Secure Footwear
  • Sneakers, water shoes, or sport sandals with straps (like Tevas or Chacos)
  • NO flip-flops, Crocs, or bare feet

Other Items to Bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses with a strap
  • Water bottle (or purchase one in our retail store)
  • Complete change of dry clothes for after the trip (leave in your car)
  • Towel for post-trip
  • Cash/card for gratuities for your guide (15-20% is customary for great service)

When You NEED a Wetsuit (provided by us upon request):

  • May & Early June: Water is VERY cold (45-50°F) from peak snowmelt – wetsuit is essential
  • Late June & Early July: Still quite cold (50-55°F) – wetsuit highly recommended
  • Cold or cloudy days: Even in summer, borrow a wetsuit if the weather isn’t warm

When a Wetsuit is Optional:

  • Mid-July through August: Warmer water and air temps, but many guests still prefer wetsuits
  • Hot, sunny days: You may be comfortable without.
  • Our Recommendation: When in doubt, speak with our experienced and knowledgeable guides who can provide you with advice after you check in based upon the day’s weather and water conditions.

Provided Cold Weather Gear:

  • Splash jacket (wind/water protection)
  • Wetsuit
  • Water shoes

Weather Note: Mountain weather can change quickly. Even if it’s warm when you arrive, afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. This is why wetsuits and splash jackets are always available.

  2. Gear up in your river clothes, guide fitted lifejacket, helmet and grab your paddle.
  3. 15 minutes before departure, your trip leader will give you a thorough safety orientation.
  4. Load up in a Wilderness Aware vehicle for a short 10-minute ride to the river.

  6. You’ll learn how to paddle then finally…
  7. You are on the river and the fun begins!
  8. The full day trip stops for a delicious riverside lunch.
  9. Before you know it, you arrive at the take-out. We load everything back up on the vehicle and start our 30ish minute drive back to the headquarters.

What class rapids are Browns Canyon?

Rapids on the Browns Canyon rafting section of the Arkansas river feature class III-IV rapids offering fun rapids suitable for most families and rafters who are new to the sport while navigating the waters of Browns Canyon National Monument.

What Should I Wear to Raft Browns Canyon?

It’s important to dress appropriately for your Browns Canyon rafting trip. We recommend avoiding cotton—it stays wet and can make you cold. Instead, wear a swimsuit or quick-dry clothes, secure footwear (no flip-flops or Crocs), and sunglasses with a strap. Don’t forget sunscreen, water, and a dry change of clothes for after your adventure. Check out our packing list page for the full list of what to wear and bring!

Is Browns Canyon family-friendly?

Yes! Browns Canyon is one of the most family-friendly rafting trips on the Arkansas River. Depending on water levels, kids of at least 6 years old and 50 pounds and up can join the adventure. For younger kids ages 4 and up, the Lower Browns Canyon offers a safe, fun, and scenic stretch of river perfect for first-timers and those seeking a more relaxed trip.

What are the names of rapids on Browns Canyon?

The Browns Canyon section of the Arkansas River features an 18-mile stretch of fun, family-friendly whitewater. Notable named rapids include the Canyon Doors, Pinball, Zoom Flume, Eggbeater and The Squeeze, Big Drop, The Staircase, Widowmaker – Including the Toilet Bowl, Graveyard, Raft Ripper, Gilligan’s Island, Seidel’s Suckhole, and Twin Falls.

Should I book the half-day or full-day Browns Canyon rafting trip?

Both options cover the heart of Browns Canyon National Monument — Pinball, Zoom Flume, and Raft Ripper — but the full-day is the complete experience. Over 18 miles and roughly 4.5 to 5 hours on the river, you’ll hit every named rapid, swim in calm pools, take in stunning canyon scenery, and stop for a delicious riverside deli lunch included in the price. Many guests who do the half-day tell us afterward they wished they’d booked the full day. If your schedule allows it, the full-day Browns Canyon rafting trip is the better value and a more memorable Colorado adventure.

What is Browns Canyon National Monument — and does it affect my experience?

Browns Canyon National Monument is a federally protected wilderness area along the Arkansas River, designated in 2015 to preserve its dramatic granite canyon walls, diverse wildlife, and pristine river ecosystem. As a National Monument, commercial access is strictly limited — meaning fewer rafting companies operate here, the canyon sees far less foot traffic than typical tourist destinations, and the wilderness feels genuinely untouched. When you raft Browns Canyon with Wilderness Aware, you’re experiencing public lands most people only ever see from a highway. We’re proud stewards of the canyon and practice Leave No Trace principles on every trip.

What happens if someone falls out of the raft?

Going overboard — what rafters call “swimming” — is a normal part of whitewater rafting, and our guides are specifically trained to handle it. Before every trip, your guide will walk you through exactly what to do if you enter the water: float on your back with feet downstream, hold your paddle if possible, and listen for your guide’s instructions. Our guides are certified in swift water rescue and will get you back in the raft quickly. Every guest is fitted with a properly sized life jacket before launching. While swimmers are relatively rare on Browns Canyon at moderate water levels, they happen and are handled safely every time.

What is the riverside lunch like on the full-day trip?

Our full-day Browns Canyon trip includes a deli-style riverside lunch served at a scenic stop along the Arkansas River. Guides set up a build-your-own sandwich spread with a variety of meats, cheeses, condiments, chips, cookies, and drinks. It’s a proper sit-down meal in one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado — and a genuine highlight guests mention in reviews again and again. Dietary restrictions and food allergies can be noted at booking and we do our best to accommodate them. Lunch is not included on half-day trips.

Can non-swimmers do this trip?

Yes — you do not need to be a strong swimmer (or a swimmer at all) to safely raft Browns Canyon. Every guest wears a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket fitted specifically to your body before you launch. Life jackets keep you afloat in moving water without any swimming effort. Our guides are trained in swift water rescue and will assist any swimmer back to the raft immediately. Non-swimmers raft with us every season and have a great time. If you have concerns, let your guide know before you launch — they’ll make sure you feel comfortable and confident.

What does 'Riverfront Location' mean in practice?

Our base is located directly on the Arkansas River, which means your shuttle to the put-in is just 10 minutes — significantly shorter than many other outfitters in the area. Less time on a bus means more time on the river. You’ll also return to our facilities quickly at the end of your trip, giving you more of your day to enjoy Buena Vista or continue your Colorado adventure. Our riverside location also allows guides to monitor river conditions in real time throughout the day.

How do water levels affect my Browns Canyon trip?

Water levels on the Arkansas River change throughout the season and significantly shape your experience. In late May and early June during peak snowmelt, flows run 1,500 to 3,000+ CFS — creating bigger waves, faster current, and the most dramatic whitewater of the season. From mid-June through July, flows settle into 800 to 1,500 CFS — the sweet spot for most guests, with excellent rapids that are exciting but accessible for all skill levels. In late July through Labor Day, flows drop to 400 to 800 CFS; rapids are still fun but smaller, the water is warmer, and the pace is more relaxed. See our Seasons section for the full breakdown. When in doubt, call us — our staff can tell you exactly what to expect on your date.

Can I request a specific guide?

Yes. When booking your trip, you can request a specific guide by name — subject to their availability on your date. Many returning guests come back specifically to raft with a favorite guide, and we do our best to honor those requests. Mention it in your reservation notes or give us a call at 719-395-2112. Our most requested guides include Gatlin, Gomez, Snack, Ashley, and many others who have earned loyal followings over multiple seasons on the Arkansas River.

PREPARE FOR YOUR TRIP

Everything you need before you hit the river — in one place. Sign your waiver online before you arrive, download packing lists so nothing gets forgotten, check departure directions for your specific trip, and browse river maps to get familiar with the water you’ll be on. The more prepared you are, the more fun you’ll have.
