White water rafting trips on one of the most beautiful rivers in the world
Exciting whitewater, stunning scenery, great fishing, and amazing side canyon hiking and swimming in the Gorge.
The Gunnison Gorge in western Colorado is a National Conservation Area and is adjacent to the newly created Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This 14-mile stretch of gold medal trout water has been nominated for “Wild and Scenic River” designation. Here below the many dams of the national park, the clear green water slips between spectacular towering black granite cliffs, dropping first into glassy pools and then plunging into foaming rapids. The scenery and geology is reminiscent of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado.
We are limited to five launches per summer, with a maximum of 10 guests per trip. We are given guaranteed launch dates each year, although it is possible we can make a trade for a different date for serious inquires only.
For questions about our launch dates or to make an inquiry about a reservation, please call us at 800.462.7238.
The river starts west of Grand Junction near the Continental Divide above Crested Butte Ski Area and flows through the town of Gunnison and on through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We launch our trips in the Gunnison Gorge at the end of the Chukar Trail west of Delta, Colorado. The whitewater rafting section finishes up near Hotchkiss, Colorado.
Getting to the river requires an easy mile-long hike down a narrow trail; the boats and group gear are brought into the canyon on horseback the day before the trip. You will need to carry your own personal gear down the trail to the “put-in”. The hike is rewarded with dramatic canyon scenery, picturesque views and remarkable solitude.
Only two groups per day are permitted to raft in the Gorge, assuring you a quality wilderness experience.
“I just wanted to say thank you for the fun time we had during our 2 day river trip on the Gunnison River. Our guides were very hardworking and considerate. We will also be planning another trip with your company next summer. We were very impressed. Also as a side note I am emailing you pictures that I thought you would be interested in. It is pictures of our guides stuffing their faces after a hard day’s work. You can hold them for ransom if you feel like it.”
“I wanted to say “thanks” for the great trip! I went on the 2-Day Gunnison trip and had a fantastic time. The scenery reminded me of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado on a smaller scale. Beautiful! Our guides, Rob, Kim and Tom made the trip fun and exciting. They were all very professional and their personalities and sense of humor made everyone feel at ease right away. By the end of the very ‘interesting’ ride on the dirt road to the drop off point we were already laughing and knew we could trust these people with our safety. They made sure they took care of each individual’s needs and the meals they prepared on the river were great. They cook better on the river than I do at home! I appreciate the simplicity of setting up the trip with just one call Your people made sure I had all the details from the departure and arrival times to arranging all of the overnight equipment in a matter of a few minutes. You have a great bunch of people in your organization. It is easy to see why you won the award for Colorado tourism company of the year. I look forward to running the Royal Gorge with you next year!”
“I just wanted to tell you what a fantastic trip I had on the Gunnison river. I’m still talking about it to everybody and I have pictures all over my office and my house. That trip was more and better than I ever expected. Special thanks to the guides Luke and Dave. Luke was especially terrific when he was so patient in getting me down the canyon on the hike to the put in point. He listened to my incessant babbling the whole way. I know they are paid to be nice the the guests but he was extra nice I thought and that really impressed me. I felt secure with those guys running the show. They helped me pitch the tent and I had the nicest conversation with them at camp. Best of all, the kept us in the rafts in the rapids (A BIG PLUS!) As to the tents, sleeping bags and pads, I thought I’d be renting less than top notch stuff. Boy was I wrong! Everything was in perfect condition. I’d been rafting before but not on an overnight excursion, and you’ve really made a convert of me. I simply fell in love with the whole experience…the rivers, the mountains and the people and it fills my heart with happiness and contentment whenever I look at my pictures or thing about it. All in all my vacation was adventurous, amazing and fantastic and really can’t wait to come back.”
“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for such an enjoyable rafting trip this summer. I am writing for the entire party of five ladies rafting on the Gunnison River with Brad on July 21-22. Not only was the trip enjoyable and the scenery beautiful, but he guide Brad was exceptional in his care concern, and help with each one of us. From the safety considerations to the cooking, to the information about the canyon and area history, he went the extra mile to take care of us, entertain us, and make sure we felt comfortable. We as a group wanted you to know what a fine employee you have and that we look forward to coming back and taking further rafting trips with your company. Thank you for a fun time.”
“A note to tell you how much our family enjoyed our recent trip on the Gunnison River. Your guides are absolutely fabulous. Including the one whose boat turned over in Boulder Garden. Of all the magnificent moments we experienced on the river from taking a mud bath to running the rapids in the ducky-the thing that made the greatest impression on our kids was Thomas overturned raft. I guess it made them realize the risk involved and what could make more of an impression than that?”
“I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed the Gunnison River excursion. I enjoyed the exertion and terrain and the knowledge you have of the river and the surrounding country was really interesting. The food was also very good. Its been 100 degrees here and I miss the cool of the mountains and a cool dip in the river. I dreamed about being on the ricver for several days after I got back. If you ever need a place to stay in Dallas, look me up!”
