Denver: Colorado's Historical State Capital

Prior to the late 1850's, the area was inhabited by native cultures including the Cheyenne, Arapahoe and Kiowa people. Prior to the 1850's, occasional prospectors came through looking for gold, found nothing and moved on. It wasn't until 1858 when Green Russell and Sam Bates found a small gold deposit near Little Dry Creek that yielded 622 grams of gold. By spring of 1859 tens of thousands of gold seekers arrived.

Montana City, Auraria, and St. Charles City were a few of the first settlements near present-day Denver. Denver City was formed by General William Larimer, in November of 1858, as was named after the Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Colorado became a state in 1876 and a state-wide vote in 1881 made Denver the permanent state capital.

Between 1870 and 1890 the city's population increased from less than 5,000 to over 100,000 due to silver being found in the nearby mountains. In the early 1893 the silver boom collapsed, though Denver was able to stay stable due to agriculture in the surrounding area. Denver stayed strong and the population surged to a quarter million people by 1920, and by 2008 reached approximately 600,000 people.

Since then, Denver has made its mark as the go-to city to both live and visit for those looking for an active, outdoor lifestyle.
