Colorado Lost Mine Tour and Off Road Adventure!

This trip is currently unavailable.

Explore cool caverns and go inside an authentic old mine on this thrilling three-hour trip aboard our 6x6 Pinzgauer Mine-Mobile!

The tour begins in historic downtown Salida, Colorado. Our Pinzgauer 6x6 military vehicle carries you on 4-wheel drive roads past geologic features such as the Wellsville Fold and a travertine quarry that supplied the finest marble this side of Italy in the 1920's. As the road winds up toward the mine you will experience breathtaking views of colorful rock outcroppings with the majestic 14,000' Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a back drop.

At the entrance to a historic manganese mine, we have preserved some of the original service structures including an ore cart, tipple and the ore chute which carried the manganese ore to the waiting mule- pulled wagons. The highlight of the tour takes you back in time. We don hardhats and enter the hard rock tunnel opening and experience what underground mining was like after the turn of the century.

The tour includes:

  • A short but thrilling complimentary four wheel drive service takes you to the Wellsville lime kiln ruins and then on to the entrance of the mine.
  • The Lost Mine is at an elevation of 8500' and holds a constant temperature of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Learn about the original discovery cut, two tunnels, three drifts and a stope where the ore was found
  • The inside the mine consists of a short and easy inclined pathway that was blasted out of the massive gray limestone formations of the Carboniferous Age.
  • The guided walking adventure takes you past deposits of manganese ore, calcite crystals and interesting vugs and veins of other complex silicates and carbonates.
  • Original timber shoring and barricades have been carefully preserved.
  • Your reward at the journey's end is a crystal coated cavern lined with dolomite, gypsum and calcite deposits that glow under the UV light show.
